Hello from San Diego!

The funny thing is, it's SO hot here that they don't really want to come of the coop into the run (that's shaded!) except when I'm out there, because they're curious about what I might be bringing them. So much for being tropical breeds! =P And even if I've put out new food or treats before they've woken up, they won't actually come out to examine them until I go out to check on them! Good thing I work from home (web application developer)!

I can also sit at the mouth of the run, and they'll come all the way to my feet (and even peck at my sandals), but just run a few paces away if anything is reaching toward them, such as changing out feed containers and such. If I leave the door of the run open for their supervised hour or two of free ranging before sunset (while they get used to the yard - there are a lot of crows around lately, and I don't feel comfortable with them circling my bantys!), they'll come out and explore UP to the edge of the run and look curiously past me but not come out until I move a small distance away, and then they'll stay mostly near the coop and around my feet if I have anything to give them, but they still don't want to be touched.

Still, I'm getting to know them, and they seem to trust me to some small extent (definitely more than my husband! =P), and I'm okay with that. Even if they don't become completely tame, I'm okay with them being cautious chickens because right now their instincts and sense of self-preservation are pretty darned sharp.
