Helllooooooo-

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Cornflakes is my first chicken. He is a rooster that showed up at my house about two months ago and has *adopted me* since then. I'm new to chickens - hence my making this account.

Some back story about Cornflakes - I live in San Juan Bautista, CA. A town known for it's feral chicken population. I was told by a shop owner that Cornflakes was abandoned a few years ago on the other side of the town (it's TINY - so he easily made it to my house). He sleeps on my tree and fence with a preference to the tree. I'm working on buying him a coop - although I don't know if he'd use it.

He's SHY and I am unable to handle him. We've made progress and he now eats out of my hand, but I basically want to know I can continue to progress with him so if necessary I can take him to the vet/keep him safe. He's scared of all other chickens - despite being such a big rooster.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Just Cornflakes.

(3) What breeds do you have?

Cornflakes is a VERY large Barred Rock Rooster.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

I regularly google questions I have about how to care for Cornflakes and finally broke down and made an account.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Photography, traveling and reading - particularly, Native American Literature.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I'm a cat lady, recently engaged and really just want to learn how to keep my rooster happy.

Greetings and welcome to BYC! So glad you joined us. Sorry to hear that you had to "break down" to do so... :lau We're GOOD folks! Really! ;) I hope you'll enjoy chatting here with us. :) I can't address your specific questions regarding Cornflakes, but there's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. Pretty sure as with any animal, building trust takes time and lots of treats. I'd guess you're on the right track. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. I recommend at least your state as most folks won't be able to figure out where if you put anything more specific (county, town, street, etc) by itself. Old folks like me :old will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

Welcome to BYC! So glad you joined us. Have you considered raising up some lady folk to complete him? He would love a flock to protect, and handling him really shouldn't be a goal. Roosters are best being socialized to other chicken and not their keeper. Some people do try and turn them into pets that they can cuddle, but that isn't really in a Roo's nature biologically speaking. It is best to grab him off the roost after dark should you need to handle your roo.

If you do set up a coop please do not buy one most are made of really thin wood might last you 2 years then they are junk. You can build a nice roomy coop for less than you can buy one that will never be big enough for more than 3-4 birds(sure it says rated for 12 (minime chicken)), but 4 Barred rocks.
If you don't have the construction skills or tools to do it yourself there is plenty of capable day labor available to you via craigslist too. Be sure to visit our Article button up top and pick a coop you like then have a handyman quote you a price andput it together for you. Just my $0.02.

Once again welcome to BYC we hope you enjoy your time here with US. :frow:welcome
