We don't have any chickens yet but we have plans to build a coop and hatch some chicks this spring. We just purchased an acreage last fall with 40 acres so we have the space for finally having the hobby farm we've always dreamed of. I've been researching 'backyard' chickens for ages but now I'm not sure if we fit into that category as our 'back yard' is a lot bigger than I ever dreamed it would be!
We are very into DIY and making things ourselves so I'm looking forward to building our own coop with all of the things I've learned looking around online and reading a lot of the threads on here before I joined!
My biggest concerns are keeping our chickens safe and happy- the climate here ranges from -50 with the wind on the worst days in January to +30 in the sun on the worst days in July/August. It's not too humid in SK for the most part and we have a LOT of wind, though we have a really good shelter belt of trees around the 'lawn' area of our home. We do have coyotes, owls and other small predators but we also have a large dog so we are hoping that we won't have to be too paranoid about predators.
I also love creating art, from knitting, crochet, macrame, cross-stitch etc. to drawing and painting sometimes.
We've got two kids, 8 and almost 6 and one mixed-breed dog, not sure what she is, probably some husky and shepherd in there. My husband works from home in the tech industry and I commute to the city for my job. We are planning to get a border collie pup in the spring.
I found BYC through googling a million questions about raising chickens and I'm stoked to read like-minded people's thoughts and advice for raising chickens
