Thanks for the welcome, everyone!
We have (had) 3 roosters - they can't be missed (or not heard) now! Sadly, we lost another one a few days ago to a hawk. We've put up string around our coop extending from the top and tied to the chain link fence (like a tent). However, since it is next to our garage there was still a gap where we hadn't put up string (no fence to tie it to).....and there the hawk sat eating our rooster in the chicken run! Down to 15.........
We've throughly enjoyed watching our hawk babies grow throughout the years (they nest in trees near our house and will perch on our back porch railings and look in the windows at us), but now we just wish they would move to new territory! They aren't doing us any favors - they eat our chickens and don't eat the groundhogs who have been destroying our garden!
Our roosters have gotten mean too : (. One used to be so loveable and now he tries to bite when petted/picked up. They tear into the hens at times as well and don't like us loving on them either. We were going to study them and only keep the best all around rooster, but do to recent events I think we will keep both of them.
We plan to finish the string around the run this weekend and hopefully avoid anymore casualties!
