Hi, pepole's Ive been lerking the message board over the last few weeks.. researching this breed and that one... trying to figure out if I can pull off this new hobby in my backyard.. Im interested for a few reasons, Eggs, Fertilizer for my garden, Pets for the kids and just somthing to do..

So anyway today im supposed to pick up 4 black copper marans that were born yesterday.. so about day old chicks, these will be our first chickens and wensday Im on the list to pick up a few silkies that will be a day old.. Im not sure what to expect lol... We went to tractor supply yesterday and picked up Heat lamps, chick starter feed, pine shavings, food dish, water thing.. pre ran my brooder last night and have a good 100 degree area in my brooder... I think Im ready..

Welcome to BYC. You might want to drop your brooder temp down to 95 for day old chicks for the first week. Then drop 5 degrees each week thereafter. Watch how they react to the heat lamp. If they move away from it, it's too hot for them. If they move towards and huddle close to it, they are cold....adjust as necessary for either. Good luck.

Will do thanks for the tip..
