Hello! My name is Devon, and my husband Evan and I are first-time chicken keepers and live in Atlanta, GA. I grew up raising horses, but always wanted more "diverse" members on our farm (that's easy to think when you're a kid, right? Especially when mom and dad handle all of the vet bills, ha!) Finally, after years of saving for our first home, renting a flock of chickens as a "trial run" and then building our very own coop/run, we have raised our first flock of hens--now about 19 weeks old.

We currently have 6 hens/pullets and have named our flock "Scarborough Fair". We have 1 Buff Orpington (Parsley), 1 Olive Egger (Sage), 1 Black Australorp (Rosemary), 1 Splash Ameracauna (Thyme), 1 Speckled Sussex (Pepper) and 1 Lavender Orpington (Lavender). We had started with 7 hens, but sadly lost our Silkie (Sesame) to a predator attack recently and are absolutely heartbroken over it. 💔 We are currently building a HUGE run extension in her memory--we are dedicating it as "Sesame's Run". I still miss her so much and feel so guilty about what happened, but we're trying to take it one day at a time.

We love raising backyard chickens and try to spend every minute we can outside with our girls. They bring us so much joy and my absolute favorite part is just sitting with them while they free range and having them keep me company while I work in the garden. I love how curious and empathetic chickens are, and how they are surprisingly smart and clever in their own way. Another fun tidbit about our flock is that our Corgi, "Monty" loves his girls and keeps watch over them with me, and he has even developed a friendship with our Buff Orpington, Parsley. He loves to let her chase him around the yard, and we're trying to teach Parsley to resist pecking Monty's bum...which isn't going well of course, because chickens will be chickens...but Monty is a good sport about it. 😊

Outside of keeping chickens, we both love to hike and camp in the mountains and are both creative and work in advertising. I also love to garden and LOVE-LOVE to cook and bake, and it's been fun to have our chickens to share kitchen scraps with.

We're very excited to join the BYC community. I've lurked the forums for a long time gathering lots of knowledge along the way (y'all helped me keep calm when I thought Pepper was a roo--I'm glad I listened to advice and waited to find that she's a lovely little hen and we can keep her!) To be honest, losing Sesame really motivated me to officially "join" and seek out more advice, knowledge and support after her loss. I feel terrible about losing her but am resolving to be the best mama hen I can be for her sisters.

I've attached some photos that we took a few weeks ago--I'm so grateful to have these photos to remember our happy times with our original seven. Sorry for the long intro--but I am excited to be here and look forward to learning even more from this awesome community. ❤️

:welcome :frow I can feel your pain. I lost my very special hen to a fox when I had let her out. I got distracted and never had any problems. I did find feathers but I never found her. I was devistated and still am. If only I put her back into her pen while I was distracted. Good luck and have fun with your pullets...
