I envy you that. My granddaughter isn't close by. I send her pictures of chicks, And she names them. I have an overload of grandsons, who live closer. None are near enough.

I grew up in rural southern Iowa where we had chickens, ducks and sheep. I spent (too many) years living in towns and cities, and now, thankfully have an acreage in near Fort Dodge where I can have any critter I want. I have a LOT of chickens, ducks and geese, still have sheep and goats, and used to have donkeys, plus --of course -- dogs and cats.

Sounds like you have some really good starter breeds on the way and that you will have some good foundation knowledge for caring for them. I bet your granddaughter will fall in love with the chicks!

Thank you for the encouraging note! I'm so happy for you! Your note gives me great hope. I moved to California as a young Navy wife. We settled into jobs and raising our family and found ourselves here much longer than originally anticipated. I've never forgotten my roots (Dubuque IA area) and although most of my family is now gone, I am still holding out hope that someday I can manage to return to the regional area. I miss the beauty of those upper Mississippi river bluffs, the fall and mostly the people. AND of course the County fairs!
For now, we start with the chickens and then who knows where it will lead!
