Hello all,

My wife and I recently got chickens, as I'm sure a lot of people did. They have now grown up and started laying eggs about three weeks ago. We currently have 9 hens and 1 roo that was badly injured by a neighbor's dog a couple of days ago. We're trying to nurse him back to health and hopefully he will make it. I found the facebook group during a search and that led me to here. This site has already been a wealth of information, and it is so nice to find someplace where everyone is willing to share knowledge and help each other out.

We have a mixed lot of chickens with a leghorn, americana, sapphire gem, easter egger and a couple of red ones that I think are hybrids. Our Roo is a barred rock that escaped a neighbor and found a home with us. The neighbor's dogs killed a few of his chickens and he got rid of the rest. Our Roo "Rocky" managed to get over the fence and into our yard at only about 8 weeks old.

We have learned that it is too easy to get attached to them, even if they are "only chickens" as some people have told us. And we love interacting with them. Their different personalities are so cute.

We're getting a little older now and have time to take care of animals more now than we used to. I retired from the Navy not long ago and my new job is a lot less time intensive.

I hope you are all having a great weekend.

Welcome. First, thank you for protecting America at Sea. Rocky is one determined boy. What can I do to help you with him?

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Have you given the cockerel electrolytes and probiotics in one water source with fresh water and a separate one? It helps combat shock.
Any injuries he received should obviously be thoroughly cleaned and sprayed with a disinfectant and monitored for infection. Keeping him in a warm area will also help him recover.
