First coop and 4 12 week old pullets arrived yesterday to our south side (Beacon Hill) Seattle front yard/garden. My daughters (4 & 7 y.o.) and I are already obsessed. My 7 year old is calling them "the teenagers".
We have 2 Barred Rocks and 2 Golden Laced Wyandottes. All four settled in to their enclosed run nicely then took a "tour" of the coop as a pack. Had to put them back into the coop at dusk as they were confused about where to go. Found them this morning sleeping all huddled together in a pile (in a nest box, will have to work on that). They were pretty skittish with all the new noises and our 2 cats circling the run, but this afternoon they seem to have gotten used to everything, including the cats. I'm using Sweet PDZ in the coop under the roosts, shavings in the exterior nest boxes, and sand in the run.
One thing I've discovered; in my neighborhood, if you put a coop on your front lawn, neighbors you didn't know you had will come out of the woodwork to talk to you. Some of them chicken keepers, some of them wannabe's, some of them just plain curious.
I've been using BYC forums for months to learn as much as I can about chicken keeping before we had the birds (and thank you for that!) I'm looking forward to actually participating now that I will have something to share!
