Hello from Seguin, TX

I am a brand new member...but have frequently visited this site over the past few years. I have owned chickens at our rental acreages...but now we have our own place and my husband is putting the finishing touches on my chicken coop which we lovingly named, "Iva Jane's Chicken Birdello and Orphanage". Long story on that name...but I will share about it later along with pictures. Looking forward to getting some feedback from all you veterans. I especially would like to know what you think is the best stuff to put down in the coops...i.e. shavings, sand, ??? Any helpful info on protecting the floor of our coop and making it easier to clean as well.

Love the coop name LOL. You'll get lots of opinions on the best cover for coop floors, but like straw. Easy enough to clean. Shaving is also good and sand in the run is good. I recently read an article about using rubber chips in the run and learned that that is great for keeping the run clean and dry.

! Pleased you joined us and happy you are starting your own chicken ranch. I agree with sumi - straw or shavings in the coop make for easy clean up. Also, when it's cold it gives a little insulation for them. Sand is good in the run - makes for less mud. Good luck to you!!

I prefer pine shavings, straw tends to mat and become frozen as it does not absorb moisture quite as well.
