Hi! My name is Sharon - I’m a wife and mama of 6 kiddos. We have our own little patch of heaven in central pa-We enjoy a tiny garden mainly growing peppers and tomatoes. We have 5 goats for fun,9 hives of honey bees, a few barn cats, 3 spoiled in house cats, and 2 dogs (cattle dog border collie mix and English mastiff) We have a whole bunch of different breeds of chickens. We have about 35 hens and 3 rooster. Our 3 roosters are silkies and one Malaysian Bantam of some sort - His name is George - He is def one of the favorites. We have just hatched our first eggs made and brooded here on our farm - Goldie has 3 babies and Broody is sitting on 3 more fertilized eggs - she was a great mom last year to the babies we gave her. Baracuda is my other broody saphire gem- I’m not sure what to think at this point with her. I went in this morning and she was eating an egg🙄- I’m debating buying some chicks and throwing them under her - I tried to break her broody for about 3 weeks and gave up but I feel like her body is paying the price. I am feeding and watering her daily but I think she is lacking serious things from sitting so long.

Welcome to BYC!!

Welcome to BYC. So glad you've come. :frow

Egg eating can definitely become a serious problem, but even though my hens have done it periodically, no one ever kept up with it. You also want to investigate. Is she eating eggs that were thin shelled, so they broke from normal nest box traffic? Is she seeking them out and pecking them open herself? If it is the latter, something simple like a mustard egg or ceramic eggs may be enough to set her straight. You can also see if it helps to get her on a feed with higher protein ratio.

This article has a section towards the bottom with some other suggestions you can try. Just post a new thread if you keep seeing it, lots of folks have experience with it.

Hope it resolves quickly!
