hello from Sligo Ireland

She made it through the night and isn't rattling anymore! I've just given her a tiny bit of water and I'll keep her in today to monitor eating and drinking but although she's looking weak she's bright eyed and comb a good colour. Must have been the heat! I'm going to leave the other 2 in the run for the day as the wimpy legged one is still struggling a bit - eating well though.
It's thought the cockerel may have had a bacterial infection and passed it on to the 2 old hens and the 2 young ones seems to have been immune. Age may have been a factor - I don't know how old the cockerel was.
Goodness re appendicitis!! Have you tried looking on donedeal.ie? Lots of birds advertised on there and usually the markets advertised too. There's also mayosmallholders.ie - they might know. If I was to do it again I would set up seperate housing so I could quarantine new birds. I've decided to go down the incubator route though and have ordered a mini one from a company in Kerry. My friend now has dorkings and is going to save some eggs for me. Her bantams successfully hatched some for her.
Good luck growing your flock!

I was going to suggest gettting hatching eggs and incubating to increase your flocks! Just be warned hatching eggs is as addicting as keeping a flock of chickens or more so!!

Welcome! And Good Luck to you both!

I can't wait to get started and I see there's a whole section on here to keep me reading for a while! Thanks JanieMarie!

That first hatch is soo exciting! And stressful! Its definitely a learning experience but theres a wealth of information in the incubating and hatching eggs section to help you along the way.
