Hi there!

I'm looking forward to getting our small coop up in our backyard in a couple months, and having a few banty hens live the San Diego beach lifestyle.

We are totally new to this, but excited. This looks like a fantastic community with lots of collective knowledge! I'm looking for the best way to find specific breeds of female bantams. I think I need to go to local people and just ask around, as no one ships only 3, and I don't want to take on more than we can handle and they can't be roos by city rules. Thoughts? Maybe a local meet up?

I would like to get 3 different breeds: one that lays green or blue eggs, one brown, and one white. Ideally not too broody, reasonably good layers, and get-along demeanors. Any suggestions?

Also it reasonable to add in 2 more later a few years down the line if my first three stop laying as much or will the older ones beat them up excessively? I can't stand a bully.

I know not to add in single birds, but I was thinking a pair.

Thanks for any advice or wisdom you can share!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. For blue and green egg layers, Easter Eggers are the only way to go. You could get pure Ameraucanas, but they are relatively rare and expensive and lay only blue eggs. Hatcheries and feed stores frequently and incorrectly market their Easter Eggers as Ameraucanas when they are in fact EEs. There is a good article at http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2011/09/ameraucana-easter-egger-or-araucana.html explaining the difference between Ameraucanas, Araucanas, and Easter Eggers. For brown eggs I would suggest Black Sex Links (Black Stars) which are friendly and hardy, egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. For white eggs, White Leghorns are the best layers but they are typically high strung and flighty. If you prefer an excellent white eggs layer that has a calmer and more gentle temperament, I would suggest going with Austra Whites. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breeds you decide to get, good luck with your flock.
