Hello just joined BYC and looking forward to all the great info ;) Moved to NC about a year and half ago from Los Angeles. Big difference from big city to country but wouldn't change a thing. We love out here and the people are so nice. We decided to raise chicken's. We have 2 roosters named Noodle (Leghorn) Mr. Cheeks (Americauna) Doodle (Buff Orphington) Duke (Black Sexlink) and McNugget (brown comet). They should start laying eggs in June YAY. Having an issue with the Leghorn tho he's getting really aggressive with my 7 year old daughter and my husband. He's fine with me but I'm worried because I also have a 2 year old and I don't want them to get hurt so I am decided whether to keep him or not. Beside that we love the country life, we started our first garden and are very excited for that also ;)

Agressive roosters can be a problem, especially when you have little ones. I hope you can get him sorted!

Welcome to BYC! :welcome See the rooster in my avatar? His name is Billy Bob. He is a Plymouth Barred Rock Rooster. He is a very large rooster and has the largest spurs I have ever seen on a rooster. He is aggressive and has kicked me more than once. What he is doing is protecting his hens. He does not seem to like men very much as the men will try to stand up to the rooster and Billy Bob would spur whoever was tormenting him. I had to tell the male species in my family to leave the rooster alone. I had my 2 year old grandson around Billy Bob and the rooster did not seem to bother him. Of course one of my Rotts favorite game was, "chicken wrestling". the dog would never hurt the rooster but Billy Bob would put all the feathers up on his neck, lower his head, look at the dog and kick the dog right square in the head. the dog in retaliation would place his head over the roosters back until the rooster said "Uncle" by sitting down. the dog would raise his head with the smile of victory on his face and the wrestling match would start all over. I thing the do and rooster were best buds.

So much for chicken stories. :yiipchick If you have a rooster that you are not sure of, I would keep him fenced if a small child is around. You also have 2 roosters that may be ok. If you only have a small flock of hens, 2 roosters may start fighting each other for the title of "cock of the walk". An aggressive rooster can hurt a child. I have a large goose one time that grabbed my son when he was 2 years old (he is 32 years old now) by the back of his hair and began flogging my son with his wings. I heard my son scream and I went outside with a broom and chased the gander around the barn yard a lap or 2. I had to watch the goose closely after that . One day a coyote took the gooses mate and then the goose settle way down. I would watch the rooster closely around your son. The rooster may pay no attention to him due to his size but when a rooster becomes aggressive, he is usually protecting (or the rooster thinks they are protecting their hens.

Watch your child when the rooster is out and if the leghorn become too aggressive, do not let him free range. The chickens do not need the roosters to lay eggs.

Oh. The rooster Billy Bob in my avatar, was killed by a coyote. He was protecting his hens. The hens were ok but Billy Bob is gone. :(

Roosters can do severe damage or worse, to small children because they are lower to the ground. A rooster can flog them easily. I wouldn't wait to see if he'll outgrow it.

He needs a trip to freezer camp, or to be guest of honor in the chicken soup pot. There are so many GOOD roosters available cheaply or even free - there is no reason to put up with an aggressive one.

Thanks everyone. I've been thinking about it and Noodle tried to flog my husband again and I don't want my children in the pen right now so I'm thinking he's gonna have to go somewhere else or be dinner. I've never killed a chicken before but my neighbor said he would do it. Coming from the city we always bought the meat at the stores LOL but my husband did go to the annual hog killing this past year so we're getting there. Thanks for the great info I want my children to enjoy the chickens and my other rooster Mr. Cheeks is chill no worries with him ;)
