Hi, so I've got a question, its my second time incubating, first time was in my styrofoam bator and I hatched 14 out of 17 chicks, the first one pipped on day 19, all went well there. Now I've got 33 eggs in a home made bator, its day 20 now, already in lockdown, temp is from 38 to 39, humidity is about 60% to 65%, I'm sure I've done everything right, the candling was perfect, showed nice looking chicks, the thing is I see absolutley no movement, I hear no chirping, there is nothing going on in there, does anyone have any advice for me?

It sounds like this is a different incubator than the first one you used? Each incubator is different, even the same make and model of the commercial ones, let alone homemade incubators. The results are not always consistent.

Is yours a still air or a forced air? Those temperatures are about right for a still air if you are taking the temperatures at the top of the eggs. Where you take the temperature is important in a still air since hot air rises. If you have a fan in there the temperature should be the same everywhere so the location is not as important but those temperatures are a bit high for a forced air. I assume you are using a good thermometer that is reading very accurate?

I don’t always see movement or hear peeping until one pips. Often I do but not always.

It sounds like you are doing things pretty well, with the one question about still or forced air and the correct temperature. Anything you change at this stage is more likely to cause harm than help anything. My advice is to be patient. I’ve had eggs hatch two days early in my incubator and under a broody hen. I’ve had them hatch exactly on time in that same incubator with the same settings and under a broody hen. Each hatch is different.

I wish you good luck with this hatch.

And welcome to the forum!

Thanks so much for replying and welcoming me, this has been my go to site since the very beginning. it is a still air incubator, I really hope everything will be fine. I guess I must learn to be patient. I'll keep you posted

Many times you don't hear anything or see movement. Each hatch can be different. Hatching can be a waiting game. LOL The stress can nearly kill you! But good luck with this hatch and keep us posted!

Welcome to BYC and enjoy all your poultry adventures!

I think that Ridgerunner said it best: "Be patient". At this point in the game, that's about all you can do. Welcome to BYC, and good luck.

If there are no external pips, no rocking, and no sounds, you can open the incubator up to check things out, but it might be best to wait until day 22.  You might be pleasantly surprised.  If not:  Have you tried tapping on eggs?  Can you candle them where they are in the incubator?  These are the least invasive methods.  More invasive is, picking the eggs up to candle them.  If you do, be sure to put them back down the same way they were oriented.  Then there is the float test... honestly, I'd wait until day 23 to do that.

Are you absolutely sure you counted your days right, and are you absolutely sure your thermometer is accurate, and your temp has been high enough?

I'm absolutley sure about the dates and the temps and the humidty, gosh everytime I walk past the bator I look like a idiot with my ear pinned on the glass door to listen if I hear anything, but I'm going to be patient, I guess that's all I can do

Your first batch hatched early. If your temps. were where they should be you shouldn't see anything until at least late tonight. What time of day did you set your eggs?

It's hard to wait, but a least you know there isn't anything wrong with them. I hope you end up with lots of chickies.
