Just signed up after reading posts for a long time!
I have 19 Black Sumatra hens, 3 Black Sumatra roosters, and one Rhode Island Red hen.
I grew up around chickens, Barred Rocks, Rhode Islands, Leghorns, Buff Orpingtons, Ameracaunas, but mostly OEGBs of several types (greys, reds, silvers, blacks, and RH's)--and overtime, the mixtures of all breeds above .
So far, the Black Sumatras are shaping out to be my favorite!
Just built them a brand new 8x12 coop with a 4x16 attached run, using mostly tips from this site. So far so good!
We keep chickens primarily for their South Texas bug eating and scorpion eating duties, with eggs being a good side benefit. They free range everyday. The Sumatras are proving to be excellent foragers!
