Just signed up after reading posts for a long time!

I have 19 Black Sumatra hens, 3 Black Sumatra roosters, and one Rhode Island Red hen.

I grew up around chickens, Barred Rocks, Rhode Islands, Leghorns, Buff Orpingtons, Ameracaunas, but mostly OEGBs of several types (greys, reds, silvers, blacks, and RH's)--and overtime, the mixtures of all breeds above :).

So far, the Black Sumatras are shaping out to be my favorite!

Just built them a brand new 8x12 coop with a 4x16 attached run, using mostly tips from this site. So far so good!

We keep chickens primarily for their South Texas bug eating and scorpion eating duties, with eggs being a good side benefit. They free range everyday. The Sumatras are proving to be excellent foragers!

Welcome to BYC from another deep south Texan who is keeping Black Sumatra. Would love to see photos of your flock. Not just for myself but everyone here loves pictures of you birds. I know the sun isn't really shining today so their green sheen won't be popping but perhaps you have a few on your phone that your extended family and coworkers grow tired of you showing them.:lau:frow:welcome

Also if you could under your account and personal details do an edit of your location to be just a bit more specific something as general as your county, TX will stop Canadians from offering you advice should you have questions later. edit----Like how to keep water from freezing in winter just an example or how to create an ezbake brooder box with a 250w light bulb.

Greetings and welcome to BYC! So glad you joined us. There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. Old folks like me :old will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

G’Day from down under CasaDeSumatra :frow Welcome!
