Hello and welcome to BackYard Chickens! :jumpy
Glad you joined our community. Everyone here is very kind and helpful :)
That's awesome that you're homeschooling. I've been homeschooled almost my whole life, and I've learned so much from being able to stay home and go outside all the time rather than being cooped up in a building and be taught things that I don't have the choice of.
I love that I'm able to peruse my interests and learn about the things I want to know more about.
Good luck!

Hi there,
just seen this post, I am not a daily checker of the BYC forum.
I too live in southern Alberta, south of Calgary, north of High River. Not a rancher though. But an acreage dweller.
Welcome to the forum, it is a really useful source for help and advice in keeping chickens, and other fowl.
I only have chickens, and have a new batch this year of Cuckoo Marans.
I had a batch of red Sussex cross a couple of years ago too.
I am an immigrant to Canada from England, where I had also kept chickens.
My only suggestion is to avoid sand as coop litter. It freezes solid in the winter. Rock solid.
Enjoy ranching, that is a hard life indeed.
