I am from a very different climate, but as such, my family is looking to relocate to the South of France in three to four years. My wife and I are enrolled in a deferred leave program where we work for 4 years at 80% salary and then get the fifth year off and still get 80% salary. We have been eying up Toulouse, but everything is wide open at the moment. Our kids would enroll in school there and we would live a relaxed life for the year with the occasional jaunt across Europe. The kids are in French immersion here, but nothing beats living in a French-speaking country. It would also help us to improve our language skills.
Good luck with your chickens! Foxes are a major concern for me as well. That is why I rarely free-range them and have a fortified coop and run.
