Hey guys,
I have been a member for quite some time now, but because of where i lived, i couldnt own chickens.
Now i am moving! Yay!
I guess i am a bit of what you would call a prepper, and i own a business where i make survival rifle slings, and i am about to start a business designing knives that i will have produced in Nepal, so with this mindset, i was looking for a dual purpose breed that was heirloom, cold hardy, tough, and excellent at foraging. I also wanted a docile bird that wouldnt constantly be flogging my wife lol
What i ended up coming to for a breed was the Jersey Giant. I have 8 eggs on the way! My... EBAY! Duh duh duh
I am a member of many forums for everything from motorcycles to vehicles and firearms, and i usually cringe when someone buys something from an unknown source from Ebay. This lady has really good feedback, and i hope that she is just an honest chicken lady.
Anyways, my buddy has had a lot of chickens, and all types of other birds, and he has a nice incubator that us self turning and stuff, so he is going to show me the ropes and help me out since this is my first time.
Now, these chickens will eventually be used a little bit for meat, but mostly for eggs. The occasional meat from culling will make my wife sad, so she doesnt want to get to close to the birds. She grew up with chickens as pets only.
So eventually i also plan on getting some Seramas for pets.
i found a farm north of me that has seramas, so i will be able to see chicks in person before i purchase them.
Anyways, that is me, i will post some pictures and questions once i get going with chickens, and.i get aquainted to the forum.
Glad to be here!
