Hello,

My name is Liz, I'm new to the chicken life! So far, I love it. I decided to get some, because we feed our dogs a raw diet, and eggs are on the list... it's getting expensive... especially since one of our dogs is an 8 month old Newfoundland pup. So, I went out and got a starter pack of 6 chicks. Only one is supposedly guaranteed to be a hen... She's an Americana. The other 5 are mixes... 2 are Legbars? Crossed with Easter eggers? All I know is their eggs will be green, and i think that is too cool. 1 is Legbar? (I really hope I'm remembering that breed correctly) and Rhode Island Red, 1 is Americana and Rhode Island Red, and the last is an adorable little Banty that looks like it's having a bad feather day! They are all about a month old. I'm so excited to see how many hens I end up having! I am loving this site. It's very informative!

I do have one question... and one correction... 2 of my legbar crosses, are crossed with maran... these two are growing... well, it's interesting. They are the same age, almost 5 weeks... one is huge, compared to the other, and the smaller one, doesn't seem to have a tail... why are they growing so differently?
 
Welcome to Backyard chickens. When getting chicks (or eggs) from breed crosses/mixes etc. You don't know what they will inherit from their father or mother. Sometimes it makes for wild combinations. That would be a reason for one HUGE chick and one smaller & tail less.

Your apt description "a bantam having a bad feather day' - tells me you probably have a frizzle chick. I do hope you end up with more than one hen, she could never keep up supplying eggs for a Newfie pup.

If you put "frizzle chicks" in the search box, I'm sure some photo examples will pop up.

Congrats on your chicks! Those are some great breeds! Definitely post in the link provided by Yorkshire Coop. And to answer you question, sometimes chicks grow at different rates. The bigger one MIGHT be a rooster but I wouldn't go drawing any conclusions yet.
 
I looked up the Frizzle Bantams... oh my goodness!!! If you could ruffle up a chicken like you can a dog... that's what I'd do... My banty kind of looks like that, but its feathers curl at the ends, and there is no fluff on its head. I will take some pics in the morning.
