I've visited BYC many times over several years and thought it would be only fair to become official. There have been a lot of posts which have helped me over the years. Maybe I can return the favor somehow. Either way, BYC is a great community for us!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? 2010
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 22
(3) What breeds do you have? Red sex links, Plymouth Barred Rocks (my favorite), White Wyandottes, Buff Rocks, EEs, a Welsummer, and a Copper Maran/Dark Brahma mix. Two of the Barred Rocks are cockerels.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? Google, how else?
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I'm an electrical engineer and love working on practical projects when I have the time. I built an automated system for my birds called IntelliCoop. Via a smartphone it can control AC outlets (for heating elements with chicks, includes a thermostat), dimming LED light for winter laying enhancement, but best of all it automatically opens and closes the coop door based on the sunrise/sunset at your location (via GPS). Before anyone asks to buy one, I only have a prototype at the moment and I hope to find the time soon to design a PC board and build a few more. There are some similar products out there so I'll have to navigate a patent minefield if I get really serious. I also enjoy astronomy, hiking, firearms, computers, weather, civics/politics, and time with my family (which often times is just hanging out and watching the chickens!).
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. We have two boys ages 3 and 1, as well as a Siberian Husky (she has killed 6 chickens in her lifetime) and a male tiger cat.
Thanks for taking the time to read my intro!
Nick
