I am new to chickens, new to Washington state, new (again) to living in a house instead of an RV.
My husband, two rescue dogs, and I have been travelling around the US (mostly southwest states) boondocking in our toy hauler for the past 8 years. During that time we checked off most of our bucket list and since we have family in the Portland area we decided to settle down in SW Washington.
I'm doing lots of internet "research" and listening to podcasts and I bought and read Dalia Monterroso's new book.
Last December I ordered 10 chicks from Meyer of different breeds for delivery on April 22. I tried to choose docile/friendly breeds that tend to get along well with other breeds.
I also selected each breed for its egg color. No silkies, polish, bantam, or giant breeds as I read too often that these breeds can suffer (or commit) bullying due to their size and aren't the easiest for beginners. As much as I would love to have adorable little bantams and fluffy-feathered cutie pies running around, I'm in it for the birds and the eggs and hope to lose as few flock members as possible.
My picks: Austra White, Barred Rock, Buckeye, Black Copper Marans, Cream Legbar, Green Queen, Olive Egger, Sapphire Jewel, Splash Ameraucana, and a Welsummer.
Any recommendations on informational books or sources would be welcome. Also, if I have made any obvious errors in my chick choices, please alert me while it's not too late to change my order. Thanks! I look forward to getting to know you and this website better.
