Hello Everyone!
I would like to take a minute and introduce myself. I'm Sheryll - a wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, and a wee bit obsessed with my chickies! I currently have 5 chickens, all of which were supposed to be girls. This weekend we began noticing evidence that one of our lovelies is looking quite handsome! We live in a neighborhood with restrictions (no roosters and a limit of 6 chickens), but are planning to have moved to a nice little place in the country by the end of the summer, so am not too worried. I am curious...how old are roosters when they start crowing or fertilizing eggs?
Several years ago we had 4 hens, but these were all but wiped out by a much-despised raccoon. Our current senior hen, Nugget, is the queen mom of the yard and was the lone survivor. She is an Australorp and a 3 year old black beauty, who normally rules the roost...but that may have started changing this weekend. Our next oldest, Moony, is a bantam Australorp. She is a year old and a mini Nugget, except where Nugget is friendly, Moony is not. Our next three were all purchased two months ago, ranging from 6-12 weeks at the time. The Americana, who is the eldest and friendliest of the three, is Minnie...or possibly Mickey...this is yet to be determined, but it's looking quite likely that we have our first male. We also have a Cinnamon Queen, Cinnie. She is quite shy, but a lovely little lady. The youngest is Wynnie, a Silver-laced Wyandotte. She is incredibly curious and follows me every where. She has won my heart!

He didn't crow again for a few months - poor thing.
