Hello from Tennessee!

Do hens get jealous when you turn your attention to other girls?

Good morning! I'm glad I'm a schoolteacher, and used to getting up at dawn, or it might be hard for me to fix my chickies their little breakfast. Today we had some oatmeal, since it's pretty chilly.

I've only recently inherited my girls; my husband bought me a henhouse for our anniversary, and we built a small 10 x 10 permanent run around it, and have a larger mobile run so the girls can explore a bit. A friend of the family had several hens she needed to re-home due to health issues, and I think I underestimated exactly how well loved these girls were. I ended up with four lovely ladies, Astrid, a light Brahma, Beatrice, a Buff Brahma (she had previously had some feathers plucked by a hen who didn't come home with me, but ther're growing back!), an Easter Egger named Elfriede, and a wonderful little (literal) teacher's pet of a Blue Copper Maran called Bernadette. All of the girls are very sweet, Bernadette is the most sociable with people, and is inclined to hop on my lap and snuggle in. Elfi likes to be nearby, and occasionally petted, but seems more to enjoy sitting next to me. Aside from Bernadette, the others seem to enjoy being held and petted once caught, but are skittish about being picked up. They all seem quite bright, except maybe Astrid...she gets confused pretty quickly and has befriended an apple. I'm glad to join this community, I'm sure I will have lots of questions, and hopefully can answer some as well. Happy clucks to all!

Glad you joined us from Tennessee! Although I don't live there anymore, I lived in Chattanooga for awhile and loved it there! It sounds like your chickens are lucky to have found such a great new home with you. Glad your enjoying them. I hope you enjoy BYC too!

Oh, I like be Chattanooga! I'm up in The Bristol/Johnson City area, right in the mountains, so I'm hoping the Appalachian fall and winter isn't too bad for them. I look forward to getting some fall foliage shots with a pretty Hen!

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow Gorgeous girls and your neck of the woods is beautiful as well. I'd be happy to introduce you on the Tennessee thread if you like and I seem to remember seeing an East Tennessee thread out there somewhere. Again welcome and we're so glad you joined us.:ya

Welcome to Backyard chickens. I loved your intro especially the part about Astrid making friends with an apple. :lau Reminds me of a long running thread about "Derperella, a special needs Salmon Faverolles," who among other things had a meaningful relationship with her friend "the grill."

That is so kind of you, and I'd like that very much. It seems like knowing folks in your locale is a good idea. I've been thinking about it in the wake of the hurricane, having a statewide emergency network for our pets might be wise!
