Hello From Texas and the foster flock that happened one night!

Hello Everyone we need some help asap. thanks for adding us.

My husband and I live in Texas with two super great dogs a terrier and a heeler and a very large organic garden.

Suddenly, two roosters and five hens came into our lives; we live in an urban homestead area. We have to keep the flock intact. We aren't certain of their previous owner's future housing situation; so we are planning on fostering this flock for a while.

We have them in a very large poultry pen 64 square feet with roosting boxes and their old coop attached. for our garden safety and our dog's peace that's it for now.
We have a better walk-in shed coop we are redesigning and free range will happen after fence improvement.

We were given their food which we can take to tractor supply to see if we can match it; it's in a container as all the direction we were given is that it's from tractor supply.
we got them a new feeder and waterer.

How do we practice safe chicken handling/ coop cleaning etc. as I have asthma? Also avian diseases?

But most importantly how do we help our chickens stay healthy and happy because I do everything for my dogs so I want to make sure I keep that level of care for our chicken friends.

thank you thank you thank you in advance!

Welcome to BYC! Best of luck with the chooks.
thank you!
Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
If you have asthma, always wear an N95 mask when cleaning the coop. As for avian diseases try to keep wild birds away from your birds and always wash your hands each and every time you come in from the coop.
Perfect thank you!!!

They all are mature hens and roosters I don't know the exact age and again Im sorry this is not typically how I acquire animals.
I was just curious about the flock dynamics. If they hadn't matured yet, you might have been in for a bumpy ride, with two roosters. It's good to know that they are settled and get along well.
I hope all works out for you, the flock, and the former(?) owner.
