Howdy! I'm joining from Far West Texas, Big Bend County. I have a few questions regarding chicken pests and diseases. But first, here's the answer to your questions:
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My family has had chickens since I was a child. I just got my flock started in 2021.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
3 Roos, 12 hens
(3) What breeds do you have?
Primarily Black Copper Marans & Easter Eggers
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love watching them do their chicken thing!!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening, poultry keeping, houseplants, & dogs.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have 4 dogs, a snake, a growing flock of chickens, and a new flock of Coturnix, which I'm hoping to grow in the future.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Google brought me here many times and I finally wanted to ask some of my own questions.
I have a question for you all as well:
My older group of laying hens (7 Easter Eggers, 2 years old) all appear to have developed favus. Many of them have white spots and black scabs on their combs and several have lost feathers on their faces and necks. I have been applying clotrimazole cream to their combs, faces, and necks for the past two nights. However, it is hard to find and a pain to apply to a bunch of fussy birds. I bought three different spray medications that I would prefer to use on their necks if possible. I wanted to know if anyone has any experience with these sprays: Banixx (2.5% Hydronium Ion solution), Vetericyn+ Antimicrobial Poultry Care (Hypochlorous acid), and Veterinary Formula Antiseptic & Antifungal (Chlorhexidine Gluconate). If any aren't useful for this application, that's fine. I like to have extra stuff in my first aide kit anyways. I've included a photo of the spots on one of the hens' combs. I can get more photos if needed.
Thanks in advance! I'm excited to learn from you all.
