My husband and I have about 5 acres, 2 small dogs, a small garden pond, and Im dragging him into homesteading and less dependence on the almighty dollar Lol. We are just getting started and Ive been drooling over the coops and run pages, figured I needed to say 'hello'. I love the site and all the comments and wonderful information on so many topics.

Welcome to BYC! My wife and I were raised in Texas. This is a wonderful site for learning all about chickens. What kind of chickens do you plan on getting?

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

This is the place to be when you own poultry! If you have any specific questions about anything, feel free to ask.

Good luck with your poultry projects and welcome to our flock!

welcome! Like they said, this is a great place for chicken owners. Like you, i am enjoying the wealth of information on here! It seemed like every time i searched google for chicken questions, the best results were on here! So i joined. :)

Well, it has taken much longer than expected, but we got 7 buff orpingtons yesterday. They are 11 weeks old.
We ended up with two coops.
The more traditional one is 6'x12' and has a seperate box and run area. We have the girls in it for now and will be using it to quarantine or for a momma and chicks scenario later.
The main coop is also 6' x 12', but its 7' tall at the highest point and 6' tall in the rear. It is made of welded steel tubing and expanded metal. It was built and used to transport two mountain lions so it will definitely protect our flock from all the varmits around, dogs and cats, bob cats, coyotes, hawks, skunks.... You get the idea lol.

Great coop. That should definitely keep the varmints out. Buff Orpingtons are a great choice. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds), and they are hardy, friendly and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and good layers of large, brown eggs. Good luck with your BOs.
