Hello BYC community,
We are the Bakers and are brand new to chickens! We have a dozen day old (mixed brown egg layer) pullets coming the 20th and 4 guinea keets coming the 26th.. Keeping fowl has always been something my wife and I have wanted to do but never thought we had the time or right space to do so. Now we have two daughters 4.5-2.5 and 35 acres so we've decided its finally time. We are an active outdoor family with many other critters in the house. Snakes, tarantulas, geckos, fish and Nora the 85lb lapdog doberman. We're planning on brooding these ladies in a kiddie pool in the basement until their fully feathered or the weather gets a lot better. There is still 3ft of snow outside and temps are all over the place. The coop is ready to go and awaiting its future residents..
BYC has been a huge help for finding the info we need and we look forward to leaning on everyone in the future with any questions we have..

Welcome to BYC! Glad you joined our happy group. This is a great place to learn and share. Make sure you have a lid on that kiddie pool. I'm using a bunny cage and my 2 day old fluff balls are already jumping on top of the brooder plate and food dish. They grow so quickly. I highly recommend the brooder plate rather than the heat lamp. Safer and much easier on the electric bill. Good luck with your new flock.
