I've been lurking for about 6 months, like an addict that can't get enough information. I currently keep a mix of old hens for eggs, but would like to start a flock of dual purpose chickens that is extremely cold adapted, friendly with children, broody, and good foragers.
I would have been content to lurk, but when I discovered the Konza Prairie Ranger page I couldn't help myself and had to join so I could ask questions about it. The Konza sounds almost exactly like what I was conceptualizing.
Thanks to all of you for sharing your ideas and making this site such a good resource.

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

Konza's are very interesting - they are, it appears, a breed in development, and are not yet breeding true to type. They remind me a lot of Delawares, another very sturdy dual-purpose bird.

Hello :frow and Welcome to BYC! Like those duel purpose breeds, Konzas sound interesting, have been watching to see how they develop.

I forgot to mention that I also want to hook up with any Alaska breeders to see what is available in-state.

Greetings from Texas! I have found that Easter Eggers and Production Reds to be very friendly, smart, robust, and good with children. They both are good layers, but they may not be meaty enough for chicken dinner.

to meet up with your neighbors go to "where am I, where are you," in the social forum so locate and post on your state thread. They could give you the most practical advice for your climate.
