I've been lurking for about 6 months, like an addict that can't get enough information. I currently keep a mix of old hens for eggs, but would like to start a flock of dual purpose chickens that is extremely cold adapted, friendly with children, broody, and good foragers.
I would have been content to lurk, but when I discovered the Konza Prairie Ranger page I couldn't help myself and had to join so I could ask questions about it. The Konza sounds almost exactly like what I was conceptualizing.
Thanks to all of you for sharing your ideas and making this site such a good resource.

Konza's are very interesting - they are, it appears, a breed in development, and are not yet breeding true to type. They remind me a lot of Delawares, another very sturdy dual-purpose bird.

Greetings from Texas! I have found that Easter Eggers and Production Reds to be very friendly, smart, robust, and good with children. They both are good layers, but they may not be meaty enough for chicken dinner.
