Hi All! I have been on the forums for about a week and decided to introduce myself - might be repetition for anyone that's already seen my posts. I live on the Big Island of Hawaii in a slightly cooler, higher elevation climate.
I'm not new to chickens, but haven't been much involved, so I recently purchased 15 from a hatchery and had them mailed here. As of this writing the chicks are about 12 days old. One passed away pretty quickly, so we are down to 14 of the newbies. I also have 5 much older hens that are in retirement
For the new chicks I have pullets for all except 2 Crevecoeur chicks, straight run. Also 2 Salmon Faverolles, 3 Barnevelder, 3 Cuckoo Marans, 4 Welsummer. Retired hens are one Easter Egger, one Rhode Island Red, 2 New Hampshire, one unknown - just pretty gold/white, and one wild local junglefowl mix that was brought to us just hatched from an egg, so we raised her. She's still pretty darn wild in some ways but will come to us and jump on our heads sometimes (uggh!).
I'm raising chickens because I want eggs of our own, to share, and perhaps some to sell to make back a little money toward feed and expenses. We also want some for meat birds, so I got the variety above to see how they do in this climate, how they interact and if I might want to choose a specific breed or two to keep and raise.
In addition to the chickens, I have a lot of edible landscaping (herbs, various citrus, berries) and raised bed gardens. Having a home-based business allows me to divide up my time this way, and it's pretty nice! I also do a good amount of quiltmaking.
I already appreciate the people here a lot - so willing to share helpful info and advice. Happy to join the BYC community. Thanks all.
