hello, i am very interested in raising chickens for eggs and otherwise. I have checked out ordinances and its ok to have them just not roosters.MY wife is on the fence, we have a spoiled dog who is very non- agressive and i think would be more apt to play or be curious.Please help me ... where do i begin? can i buy chicks from a general store? help???????

You can buy from a feed store but you'd get more of a selection online or placing a special order through your feed store

There are plenty of hatcheries as well that you can order from online or call them: Meyer hatchery, Ideal Hatchery, MyPetChicken, Murray McMurray hatchery, Cackle hatchery...just to name a few.

Welcome, I just joined myself! I got some chicks for the first time this past weekend, I just picked them up from Tractor Supply. They seem to be doing well, so far so good. I went to my local feed store and they all looked really unhealthy there, I felt bad for them. I guess it also depends on what type of breeds you want; a lot of feed stores like TSC don't have as many interesting breeds as a hatchery might. Good luck!

You can buy from a feed store or hatchery, but you can probably also find a number of local breeders who sell specific breeds. Best of luck!

You can buy laying hens in craigslist. Just click on Farm & Garden. If you are looking to buy chicks, Runnings Farm & Fleet sells them. Chicks may not be in stock yet.
