Hello from the cool part of AZ that no one knows about!

I have a worksite in Yuma that I travel to every couple months. I almost always stop in Dateland for a date shake. I don't know how life is possible down there during the summer. I don't even have A/C installed in our house here. We never need it!

It is tough out here, people say you get use to it ive been out here for 20+ years and still not use to the heat lol. The date shakes are awsome just a little pricey so I make my own lol.

Hello BYC peeps!  I am currently prepping for hens for next spring.  I'm planning on starting off with three hens and will attempt to keep the flock to no more than five, with at least two actively laying hens.

Currently, I'm building my own coop out of all recycled/repurposed materials.  I am planning on buying the ChickenGuard door opener, so I won't claim the coop as 100% recycled, but I'll be very close.  The wood is all from pallets I had leftover from our home's build.  I just picked up a few things today from the ReStore, and the last big piece to the project will be metal sheeting/roofing for the roof.

I am hoping to find plans for a roll-away nest box, so if anyone here could point me in the right direction, that would be super-awesome.  I did see a great guy named "Opa" has posted photos, but I can't locate the plans.  Are they for sale somewhere here?

Thanks All!!

Come join in on the Arizona thread.. Show your wonderful coop.. :highfive:

I should be able to mostly finish the coop/run this weekend, so I'll update here and in the coop section with photos. I still need to build the roll-away nest box and the chicken ladder, but I have all winter to do that. It looks really nice so far!

Pretty far along now. The only thing left is to build the roll-away nest box, the chicken ladder, my watering system, the ridge cap for the roof (had to order it today), the roosts, and enclosing in the underside of the coop.

I have a question for the experienced folks here - Will chickens be able to fly over this fence? It's 4 feet high. I was going to put up some netting to guard against hawks anyway, but with the coop and run being completely covered by the ponderosa trees' canopy, I wasn't sure if hawks would even be a problem.

As for predator-proofing, the coop is a tank. A mountain lion is probably the only thing that has a chance of getting in here. So they're safe during the nighttime, while during the day, my three dogs will be around to scare off anything else.

Is my thinking way off here?

Anyway, enjoy the photos, and please don't be shy to tell me what I'm doing wrong.
