Heckel's Hens :

I'm from SE Virginia, too, and now I'm terrified the chickens will get eaten. What exactly do you do with the red lights? Where do you hang them and are they on all the time? Thanks!

The red lights flash just like they do at christmas. They are hung outside just under the roof of the hen house. Red is a warning color too predators that go bump in the nite. They think someone is watching them and wont come near the place. The shame is it only works at night thought. I have noticed a eagle buzzing by there run a few days ago, hope it keeps its distance.

The roos I had were way too aggressive and way too big. The last one to go was the biggest and baddest of the 4. He made getting anywhere near the coop or run a nitemare, even after readjusting attitude more than a few time. He was just one of those guys that you couldnt keep happy. I do want another roo though considering hatching my own biddies in the near future. The amount of knowledge on here is unreal. I have already started building my own incubator from the information on here

Man..Im so sorry to hear about your lose with the first ones. Thats scarey!! Now Im scared that what we plan to do wont be enough to keep out our predators! Im new here too...we plan on building a coop and buying some in a couple of months...totally excited and anxious...BUT we do have predators...we have several neighbor's dogs that run around, hawks in the sky, and at night I know for a fact we have coyotes, etc. We plan on having the whole thing fenced in with steel 1 inch mesh, 6 ft high and at least 8 inches into the ground and also have it all the way across the top too. I figured that would do the trick and keep them safe but now Im wondering from what you have experienced! The lights sound like a good idea though!
