Hi everybody!
I live in central Yukon but I'm originally from Québec.
I had in mind to try out chickens last summer and was lucky enough to be able to "rent" 3. Which was a good deal for the other part and myself as well since they were so lovely!
There was Flocon, my guess by looking at pictures is that she was a Rhode Island Red. Great personality and good layer. Not quite as tamed as the other 2 and liked wondering farther and the other. The back of her head was bad from being at the bottom of the pecking order but looked wonderful by the end of the summer. She was fast and funny.
Raquette was a big grey hen with feathers on her feet. No clue which breed. She would lay 4 or 5 time a week.
And there was Arbre. She's the one on my profile picture. Welsummer or Chantecler or??? I don't know, she may not be pure either. Anyways, she was the old one and she chosed our place to retire. She was loud and slow and my daughter loved to pick her up so much until Arbre started pooping on her, than she was finally able to free range. She was best body with Raquette.
At the end of the season I had to bring them back, I was going back home to visit my family anyways. Found out the couple from whom I got the chickens were giving everything away, I tried to get our 3 good girls back from distance. He kept my 3 but2 of them weren't the right one. So my partner arranged something with the new owner for a swap. That morning when he went to get the 2 wrong hens there were feathers everywhere... A marten I gotten into the coop so that was the end of my favorite Flocon. As for the 2 others I still have to go find out if they were mixed up or not...
Long story short, we all felt in love with chickens in my family. Now I get to start fresh most likely. Will be getting 25 Mistral gris for meat and still trying to figure out the laying part. We live off the grid and love to go trapping during winter so I have to be very reasonable with the amount I'll be getting since I will have to fly them by helicopter in the fall to the trapline, and ski-doo back in the spring. It seems quite complicated I know, it's also keeping me awake at night because I am trying to find a way so I can have it all. In the mean while we craft with all the feathers we collected throughout the summer, life is great!
