Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I have had chickens several times in the past. The last was 10 years ago. All the sorts of breeds you would find at the local feed store or whatever someone would give to us.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

In the painstaking process of deciding which breed to get. But want no more than four. Ever time I find a breed I think will work, I find another one, or have a hard time trying to figure out if they can handle the cold and our summers. Not so hot but cool nights.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

We love bird watching and chickens are just so much fun to watch. I am a gardener and I would love to have them to scritch up soil, eat bugs, eat compost, provide fertilizer, and do a job other than egg laying. They will be busy hens in a paradise of an acre with loads of trees and interest. Oddly enough, egg laying is lower on our list as it is just the two of us. I can probably unload eggs to our bodybuilding buddies. I couldn't sell a glass of cold water to a dying man in Death Valley. Not a salesman at all.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Gardening. Body building. Growing our own medicine. I love working on our little acre+ postage stamp Snow Globe (so called because it is our private place we have cocooned in and shut out the rest of the world.)

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

Married nearly 41 years. Retired RN. My husband is in the energy business. We lost our only child and our grandchildren three years ago, so it is just the two of us. We have two Magical Beings, please don't call them dogs, it offends them. I am horse crazy, and had planned on a horse again, but starting out with chickens is more than enough for me at this time.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?

I think I just found it doing online research on chicken breeds. I need really good input on what to get as we have the weirdest weather here in north eastern New Mexico. Normally cold winters but so far have only had a handful of days freezing. Summers are relatively pleasant and dry, but having a hard time figuring our gardening last few years due to climate change. Have no idea anymore what to expect.

Welcome to the flock! You might want to check out the New Mexico thread if you're struggling to figure out what breeds might be best for your area. Chickens tend to handle cold much better than heat, so if your summers aren't super hot i would think most breeds should do okay with your weather. If you don't get hot hot summers, maybe look into breeds with smaller combs (pea combs, rose combs, cushion combs, etc). Maybe brahmas, chanteclers, wyandottes, or ameraucanas?

Oh my dear you have been through so much. I hope you enjoy this group and make many friendships here and that all your magical beings prosper!

Thank you! Our summers are really pretty nice. We can still see 50s in June. We had three days that got 100 last summer. Seeing a lot sooner 90s now though, in July rather than mid August. It is dry here. I work out in the garden most days until 2. We have loads of places to put a chicken tractor in shade. I thought my choices were restricted and leaning hard on Dominique and Ameraucanas. I loved the Wyandottes but don't want to mess with the fluffy feathers. Oddly enough, doing a deep dive on the Black Jersey Giant, if getting a chick today it would be the winner. Yesterday was the Dominique, day before Plymouth barred rock.....lol

Edited to say when I am out working in the yard or garden, which is daily all day long, the chickens will be able to free range but we are building a chicken tractor 8x10 for them. And converting our 12x21 greenhouse into a coop with a run. These are gonna be happy birds!
