Hi - I'm pretty new to the chicken thing. We live in the city and last year a friend of mine, who raises chickens, suggested that I get some chicks for my kids to raise for the summer and then send them on to her at the end of the summer. So we did and we've had a ball with them! We got about 15 of all different kinds of bantams, and as the roosters started crowing, we'd send them to my friend (what a hoot to hear the roos trying to crow for the first week or so!). At the end of the summer there were a few chickens that my kids didn't want to part with, so we decided to keep four of them and see if we could do it without the neighbors knowing (I checked, and we're not suppose to have chickens at all, but we have enough yard and trees around us that I thought we'd give it a go) - so far so good.
We have 5 kids (4 girls and a bouncing baby boy), and they have all gotten such a big kick out of these chickens (especially the little bantam eggs!). I must admit, I think I'm getting at least as big a kick out of them as the kids - my husband just smiles, shakes his head, and goes along with all my crazy ideas - Thanks Honey!
We're going to pick up some new baby chicks tomorrow to put under our broody cochin - I hear that night time is the magic time to do that so we're going to give it a try.
