My is Jeremy and we live just outside the Portland, OR area. The chicken thing started recently when our two daughters (10 and 14) wanted a pet. We settled on chickens. My wife and I talked about it before, but never followed through. We now have five 8 week old chickens. Two partridge rocks, a Dominique, a black Australian, and a Dixie rainbow. Having a lot of fun! I can see why this can become an obsession. My older daughter has become the chicken whisperer and spends a lot of time with them and the chickens love her. I’ve been lurking on these forums quite a bit and decided to join the community for questions and support.

Welcome to BackYardChickens! So glad to have you here in our wonderful community of friendly, helpful, knowledgeable people! Hey, we sold our house in Portland a year ago - we lived in St. Johns. Now we live in Lakeside, Oregon and have a flock of 10 birds, 13 of which we hatched ourselves.( No, the numbers don't add up but we had 3 turn out to be roosters, which we aren't allowed to have here in the city limits. The good part is, we ate the first one last night and he was delicious!) I will have to look up Dixie Rainbow...I think you may mean Black Australorp, not Australian. Yes, it can certainly be an obsession. I loved hatching eggs so much that I REALLY want to do it again, but the square foot of our coop and run is only suitable for 10 chickens. Lots of fun hatching them, though!
