My wife and I live in the Philippines and we are new backyard chicken owners! These are our first ever livestock. We started off with a straight run of 12 australorp chicks because the breed seems like a perfect fit for us. They are a week old now but unfortunately we are having issues =/ One died yesterday and two died today, so we are now trying everything we can to prevent any more deaths. The brooder, temperature, ventilation, bedding, food, and water all meet the standards I read online, so I think something else is killing them. We are going to give our remaining 9 some poly vi sol (I read about that on this site) and coccidiosis medicine and hope that will be enough. It's definitely been a rough ride for our first ever chicks, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. It's still sad for the chicks, though. I think if we end up with less than 3 or 4 hens then we may just get some RTL native chickens. Unfortunately the native chickens lay far less eggs and don't have as good of a temperament. I wish our first experience with our own livestock was better, but we are definitely learning a lot more under these circumstances.

Hello, it's nice to have you here! Make yourself at home and always feel free to ask questions. I hope the health issues clear up, if you need help there's an ER forum where you can get advice.

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

So sorry you are having such a rough start. :hugs Many brooder deaths are a result of Coccidiosis and requires Corid to kill off this protozoa. Definitely post in our Emergency forums as soon as possible, it kills fast... https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures.10/

Good luck with your flock and welcome to ours!

Thanks for your insight :) My wife tried to get medicine for coccidosis today but the stores were all closed already (my city has early curfew hours because of the pandemic). We plan to get medicine first thing in the morning.

Perfect! Yes all birds carry this protozoa and develop immunity over time against it. Chicks have no immunity, so it's important to keep the brooder very dry and clean. Don't use Corid if you are feeding medicated feed however, you would then need to switch to feed without medications. Keep us posted, I hope you don't lose any more! :hugs

Thanks! The remaining 9 seem to eat nonstop so I'm optimistic they will live through the night to be medicated tomorrow :) I don't believe their feed is medicated but I will definitely have my wife ask the feed store tomorrow before she buys any medicine.
