Hi, new to BackYard Chickens but enjoying it very much with researching ideas for a coop and run. Since we are a bakery...Eggs...Eggs, have children and grandchildren we are going to covert our storage shed into a coop.

I have a picture below of the shed.

I understand for the run to use squirrel cloth, cement edging along the outside, and thinking as the base to use a partial creek sand raised bed and partial grass or should I go with all sand??

I will have the run attached to the coop with a door. Should I cover the run with cloth also or go with some sort of clear or metal roofing?

The shed is 10' x 17' .... my thoughts were to partition it in half for our chickens and half for our dog...sleeping purposes only... so the chickens would have an area of 10' x 9'. The shed has raised plywood as the floor....should I leave it or cover that also?

I know I need to add ventalation according to your articles.

Sorry for the long read and plenty of questions!

Thanks!

Bruce

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan :D

I used sheet vinyl on the floor, makes it very easy to clean and it resists moisture well. If you have grass in your run it will not last long, the birds will decimate it. I covered half my run with plastic sheets, the birds really enjoy the shade and like to stay out under shelter when it rains. The other half is covered by heavy poultry netting.

I think you are going to get a stunning coop out of that shed

Have a look in the Coops section for ideas. We have some very creative members here.

I've also used vinyl flooring. I just bought the peel and stick tiles, but I must say sheet vinyl flooring is better. In one coop we used the vinyl tiles they stuck fine, next coop we did in vinyl tiles for some reason or another the box of tiles didn't adhere well AT ALL, so the next coop we just bought a wood patterned sheet vinyl flooring and it looks and works amazing!

I can't answer any questions because I am a newbie to, but I just saw that you were from my town and I wanted to say hi! What a beautiful shed to be able to work with for your coop, I bet it will turn out amazing!
