Hello all,

We live in Plainfield a suburb of Chicago. I work with someone who has a small farm in Indiana and introduced us to "fresh eggs". We enjoy them so much we are deciding to start our own little egg factory. We are still in the planning stages and that is how we came to this site. Our goal is to have between 3-5 hens(roosters not allowed). Looking at building a raised coop 4x6 with an attached run 4x12.

I have already spent about 9 hrs searching through here gathering information and it is pretty overwhelming all the info here. If there is anyone near me that can offer up information that is specific to our region for coop design and chicken breed preference that would be great. Any general information would also be helpful because I really don't want to do a trial and error process on this.

Thanks In Advance.

Thanks Cuz.

Like I said the information is overwhelming here. I do look forward to learning as much as possible about having chicken and hopefully I will be able to help others in the near future.

! It's great to have you aboard! Happy you are finding BYC useful!! Glad also that you are able to secure your own flock - once you've had farm eggs it's hard to go back to store bought! You might like to chat with some local poultry folk - you can find your state thread in the following link: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread
Best wishes and thanks for joining BYC!

Rule of thumb is 4-5 sq.feet per bird (excluding nest boxes & roosts) in the coop and 10 sq. feet per bird in the outdoor run. It's always better to build larger than you think you need. You will quickly develop chicken addiction and want to buy more and more. Rather than putting an addition on or building a second coop just make it bigger to begin with. You will thank me later.

Welcome!

As you have already received links to some great starting points, I will just wish you all the best.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
