Hello from the Texas Hill Country!

My family and I are getting ready to get Orpingtons in the spring. My mother has them and they are really great, gentle chickens. I think they will be great for us since we have a 3 year old little boy. I've had peacocks in the past and have dealt with some pretty mean male birds and would like to avoid that with roosters at all costs.

We will be constructing the coop and run pretty soon and I'm pretty excited to get fresh eggs! We love our breakfast in this house, lol!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to our flock. My wife and I were both raised in the great state of Texas. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens, and Orpingtons (we have some in our flock) are a wonderful breed for children; regular lap pets. I resolved the aggression problem with roosters by not having any. We currently have 25 hens and no roosters in our flock, and we get loads of eggs without all the aggression, fights, biting and feather plucking, crowing in the middle of the night, feeding of non-productive mouths, drop off in egg production, and over-breeding and battering of hens that goes along with having roosters. Our hens are stress free and enjoying life without a rooster around. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.
