Hello from the Willamette Valley, Oregon

Hi! I am so glad I found you guys. I've been stalking the site for days, and finally decided I needed to join in all the fun! For as long as I can remember I've always wanted chickens. But living within the city limits, it wasn't allowed. Now I don't know when they changed the law...but I only found out about it a few days ago. I am so excited! Now begins the process... First I have to build the coop, apply for my license/permit. The city has to come out and inspect it...THEN I can get my chickens! I've been looking over some of the awesome coop designs on here...loving them! And I have begun researching what breeds would be best for my area. And what are available locally. So far I'm finding Barred Rock, and Rhode Island Reds...
But here's my problem: The city will not allow me to have Roosters (which is fine with me), but how do I guarantee I get females and not males???
Also, I'm hoping to have my chickens in their coop by end of summer, so I should probably start with a couple pullets, and hold off on getting chicks til next spring. Any thoughts?

! Pleased you joined us! Congrats on being able to get chickens!!!!

If you got chicks you would be be easily able to coop them and it still be summer - you'd have eggs by Christmas! Reputable hatcheries are good at sending sexed chicks - I've never had them make a mistake. Not sure how many you're looking for but some even allow you to order only a few. The selection is staggering! I have a mixed flock of only 18 hens but they are of 14 different breeds - I love the variety! Check out the hatchery link below and have fun with your birds!!

Thanks! Someday I hope to live in an area where I can have as many as I want. But for now I'm only allowed 5. My concern about the timing is getting my DH out of his chair, and building the coop. The the licensing could take a while. The city's website even said "once the coop has passed inspection, we will get your permit to you AS SOON AS POSSIBLE"...so no telling how long that will take lol That's why I was thinking I wouldn't have time for chicks.
