We are TLH Farms located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. We are a beef cattle farm with currently only 13 head, no chicken houses on the farm. We live on the farm and have a large fenced backyard so we decided to get some peeps in June of 2019, first as a therapy as I recently had gone through a hemmoragic stroke and am unable to return to work. We started with 10 peeps. 3 lavendar obingtons, 3 ameraucanas, 4 australorps (1 turned out to be a rooster). We watched them grow as we built and made preps to an out building to house them. We finished there pen and outside run. End of July we found 3 9 month old hens that needed a home as owners were moving, 2 barred rocks and 1 buff orbington, they were free. Come August my husband was on craigslist and found a couple moving with 13 hens of various breeds and ages needless to say we went and got them for free. At this point we were building two more smaller coops in same out building to keep younger/smaller hens separated from older/larger ones. September and on craigslist again found a person that had 10 peeps 3 weeks old $1 each, got them. 3 weeks later person we got the 10 from 3 weeks ago called and said he had 7 peeps he would give us if we wanted them, got them too! We ended up with 42 chickens and one rooster by end of September at a total cost for chicks $35!!!! In December a friend was trying to get rid of 3 jersery giant brahma mixed roosters, we got them free. 46 total. 42 hens, 4 roosters. We now let chickens out in pasture field with cattle they enjoy the field and trees and the cows like to watch them, especially the little calves are amused by the chickens. We have been selling eggs and someone who buys eggs from us gave us an incubator (free). We hadnt thought about hatching eggs but we took it of course! 1 week ago we got a call from the person we had gotten 2 sets of chicks from last fall, he had 8 black ameraucana 1 week old, he gave us the peeps and we gave him a dozen eggs to hatch. Yesterday we had our first 4 eggs hatch, 7 more still no signs of hatching ☹. Yesterday one egg was moving and chirping but no signs of movement since last night. Tapped on egg and nothing, what should we do? Should we assume it is dead or should we be patient and how long should we be patient? Should we pip it? This is first time doing this! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
