Howdy Y’all!

My name is Ben! Just about a year and a half ago I separated from the Air Force after my 4 year contract was up. I bought a house in upstate NY just over a year ago with my wife. We have 2 amazing young boys. One is 2 1/2 and one is 6 months. We have 2 dogs, a German Shepard husky and a Pit bull terrier. Middle of April during quarantine I was at Tractor supply and said screw it and bought 8 chickens. Called my wife of course before I bought them and said Wouldn’t it be cute for our 2 year old to wake us from his nap and see chicks. We have 4 golden laced Wyandotte’s and 4 Barred rocks. About 2 weeks ago they went into the coop and a week after they went into the coop we let them out. We are doing 100% free range. The next day I see something with a tail run into the coop about an hour after I opened up the coop. Found a cat in the coop and shot of a warning shoot with my shotgun. About 30 mins later I see the cat about 20 yards from my hens just staring at them. I put my girls away and start taking to the neighbors. Found out it belongs to a neighbor who has 9outdoor cats and 4 dogs. She said she couldn’t keep the cats inside. So the next day I bought a 2 year old Rhode Island Red rooster. We named him Red Rocket. Haven’t had a problem with the cats since and the hens seem happier. Just wanted to say hi as I am newtoo chickens as of April and have gotten all my info from backyard chickens!!

Nice to meet you Ben. I've never been thrilled with folks who get cats and let them roam outside for most of the day. They kill too many song birds and chicks if they can find some.
If kept as house cats from day one they are fine with it. Some owners just don't want to be responsible for clearing the litter box.

Hello, Ben, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I hope your RIR rooster is good with the kids. They are known for sometimes being very aggressive. You won't know until the pullets start laying and so does he. Things might change. I've got my fingers crossed for you.
