Welcome! I am from Upstate NY, I am new to this as well! I brought home three chicks this morning and our dog ( a long haired mini dachshund) has a great deal of interest in this chicks. But I plan to do the same as others mentioned - leaving the chickens in secured in a run before letting them roam free in the yard with the dog. We don't leash our dog in the yard so I'd be afraid he would go chasing after them. So like you said he's going to definitely need some correction when the birds come out of the run and thats probably when we'll leash him in the yard to train him how to be around the birds.
 
Welcome from Saratoga County! I keep my chickens in a fenced in area since my cocker spaniels think it is their goal in life to "get the chickens". You have a bird dog too, so be wary and watchful. When my dogs are in the house, then I can let the girls out for more range time in a much, much larger fenced area. It's already a super bad year for ticks, so your girls should have lots to keep them busy! Good luck. Chickens are awesome :)
 
Thanks everyone for all the support. My hens are doing well. I have them free ranging for most of the day.

Cookie the German shorthaired pointer us seems mesmerized by the birds. She has not shown any aggression. She did seem a little upset when the birds were drinking out of her water bowl.

I am getting seven eggs a day like clockwork. We have even been able to name two of the birds. They are all leghorns and pretty much identical but we are starting to notice the subtle differences in appearance and personality.
 
Hi there,
I raised my rottweiler puppy at the same time I had chicks. He is now 15 months old an the keeper of the flock !! I started by taking him in the coop with me, on leash, with lots of treats. I would handle the birds , when he showed quiet interest, he'd get a treat & praise. The birds became acustomed to him and after a short time stopped reacting to him. All is well now. He no longer goes in the coop............... he's just too big :-) , but does go out in the chicken yard when I feed scratch or have to fill waterers.
