Hello all,
I have been lurking for a couple months and decided to finally join. I am completely new to chickens. I have 6 twelve week old chickens. I got them as week old chicks and have enjoyed them more than I thought I would. I have three buff brahma pullets and two silver sebright pullets plus one silver sebright cockerel. I have them in a 4X8 chicken tractor.

I also have two dogs, a pit and a hound, both rescues and two horses. A TNN walking horse and a welsh pony. I have two grown sons, a husband and I am a high school art teacher.

I wanted chickens for fun and eggs. Was not expecting the rooster but he is ok. He did jump on me the other day when I bent over to get something out of the coop. I turned on him and stomped the ground. He backed off and has not bothered me since. Hormones I guess. I will be keeping an eye on him. I would hate to have to re home him!

Keep an eye on that rooster - some of them are determined to end up in freezer camp or the soup bowl

Welcome to BYC. You are bigger than that rooster. Get a short handled fishing net. The next time he comes at you, scoop him up and carry him around n the net. That should help adjust his attitude. Keep your eye on him when you bend over. Even though he is small, he could damage an eye.

Thank you and I will keep an eye on him. He danced at me a little today and I tried to grab him and pick him up but he is just too fast. It did seem to calm him down that I even trried to grab him. The net idea is good! I also read somewhere that you can catch them easier at dusk when they are roosting. I really hope he is just testing and I can break him of this. He does not even have spur buds yet so that helps my confidence. I got spurred down the chest once by a friends rooster. He was shooting for my face! They re-homed it as it also went after the kids. Luckily I don't have young kids around to worry about. He is a beautiful Silver Sebright and I like that the hens will have some protection so I hate to loose him.

I look forward to learning a lot here!
