Hatching
I am, or have been, a lurker for some time. I have used the BYC forum extensively to make sure we were doing things the right way. Thanks to all of you active posters, we have been successful... so far. We started with 12 chicks and now have 13 hens. We rescued the +1 from a friend who had a raccoon disaster. We gave her a new home and she has integrated very well with our flock. It did not hurt that she was about 4 weeks ahead of the flock and could fend for herself. She is now laying and ours are not far behind.
I did not expect to have 12 or even 13 hens, because everything I read said you will lose a few. Well, we are probably going to have to rent a stall at the farmers market to sell eggs because there is no way we will be able to consume or give away a dozen eggs a day!!
My wife, Michelle, and I will be around every so often and will try to keep you updated on our flock.
I will, at some point, post my coup and run, along with the build progress pictures.
Thanks for being here BYC people!
