Hello! I have dropped in on this forum from time to time, but today is my first day as a registered user. We started our backyard flock in April 2009 with six chicks, and currently have five hens - three arucanas and two buff orphingtons. Getting about 3-4 eggs a day, which is just enough for our family of five. So far, we've been remarkably lucky - our girls are healthy and seem happy with their run and the garden and kitchen scraps that we give them. In fact, the biggest issue we have is with one of our dogs, who spends her days plotting ways to get at the chickens - so far she has killed one, but there have been several other close calls. We now have the flock in an enclosed run which she can not harm.
Thanks to all for the help and advice provided on the forums! If I can figure out how to add an image, I will post a picture of our flock
