Hi all,

I have a small hobby farm in rural Virginia. Have a small flock of Faverolles, Easter Eggers, Wellsummers, and Blue Splash Marans. I lost my rooster a few months ago due to a not to bright husband who failed to connect up the hot wire after feeding - do not know what got him but it was ugly. Anyway - what motivated me to join now is I just received an order of chicks from My Pet Chicken (my third) and of the 7 chicks I ordered 5 were dead - 3 doa and 2 on their way out. I am devastated. They ship USPS 2 day and something seems wrong about that. I have tried to reach them and cannot get through - no response to email or phone message. I am thinking I need to reverse the credit card charge and order someplace else - what do you think?

Do you have problems with avian predators? Solutions? I lost 4 hatched chicks this summer but have no idea to what.

Anyway - looking forward to connecting with other chicken enthusiasts - I love my chickens!! Even better than my sheep!

Sorry to hear of your losses. I recently lost 16 out of 23 of my chickens when some dogs got in the pen, so I know what you're going through? We got our chickens from Tractor Supply and Russells Feed Store. I've heard this is a bad time to get chicks. They're usually more available in the spring.

! Great to have you with us but sorry to hear about your losses. Are you saying you couldn't get through to the post office or MPC? I'd say your due some restitution!

The problem with TSC is that they have a very limited selection - no Faverolles to be sure. I am just floored that these companies do not use express delivery . Hoping to hear from someone in my neck of the woods that has chicks for sale. This is actually a better time to get chicks as they can get fully acclimated before winter - Fall is so much more agreeable than Spring and summer.

True when I got my Rhode Island Reds it was either them or something Velders. (Sorry ) When I got the Barred Rocks at Russells Feed Store, that's all they had. But I'm happy with what I got. Especially with the Reds, nice big eggs, some double yolkers. Barred Rocks haven't started laying yet, so don't know much about their eggs.

Go to "where am I, where are you," sub forum to locate and post on your state thread. Hopefully this will bring you in contact with someone in your area. Then you wouldn't have to have chicks shipped.

Did you open box of chicks at the PO? That is usually best so they can document that the chicks were DOA etc. MPC should issue credit or replace the dead ones, I don't know what these places do about chicks that don't arrive DOA. My friend buys from breeders and they send overnight express from PO which ISN'T overnight - sometimes it takes 3 days for a lot of money & PO doesn't guarantee overnight delivery they just charge a premium for it anyway.
