Hello from wales

Hi., Lisa, Welcome. I have a soft spot for Wales. My grandmother was born in Swansea, and I have cousins who have visited. You have pretty birds. Although there are figures and information given, chickens are living things and the numbers may or may not apply to your particular flock.
When I was starting out, for a while I had two hens and one rooster then when the two chicks I was raising got older I had a 4 to 1 ratio and no problems.
Then I hatched a clutch and was overrun with roosters so I made a bachelor pad and searched desperately for good homes for the nice ones.
It finally worked out. Ratios are something to keep in mind but sometimes we just can't/don't adhere to them. It does make it much easier when everyone gets along.

I'm glad you joined us!

Ideally, you would want each rooster to have 6-8 hens. However, two roosters and four hens might work; it varies with each set of birds.

Good luck with your chickens!

Welcome to BYC

Glad you joined the flock! I would add as many hens as I could and see if the two cockerels are able to co-exist happily without hurting each other or the hens. Unfortunately it will depend on their temperaments, whether it would work out or not, but I think them having grown up together will help some. Good luck!

OKay thank you ... they do have good tempreaments. I think i am going to rehome the blue maran and keep the light sussex. He isn't as timid as the blue maran and is more social with my kids. I am lucky to live around a lot of farms and tourist spots that have hens for petting, so i will see if they can help give him a new home. Hope your having a great day so far.

Ahh okay. i have decided to rehome our Blue maran and keep the light sussex. Just coz he is more social with us a family. I will add more hens once i rehome him. So you think 4 will be okay? unfortunately i don't have room for 8 hens as we have 2 large ducks that also live in the shed. As it is a rented place i can't really do a lot of altering to the backyard.

Thank you for your advice

Hiya, thank you for getting in touch. I actually live about an hour from Swansea, im in Carmarthenshire. Small world. Have you ever been over here?
I am gathering that it can depend on the roo's themselves, and mine luckly are both pretty cool with us. Our Blue maran is slightly more timid and although i would love to keep them both and add more hens, i just don't have the space. When we eventually buy our own property i know i will expand on our flock as i have become a huge bird fan. But sadly, for now i can only have a limited amount. Hopefully Henny ( the roo ) will be cool with 4 hens and they will all be happy. Hope you have a wonderful day
